TWO suspected illegal immigrants were detained by Devizes police on New Year's Eve. Two police officers' attention was drawn to a box lorry parked outside an Indian restaurant in Sheep Street at about 5.30pm. The vehicle was parked with two wheels on the pavement and no tax disc visible.
Officers spoke to a man in the back of the lorry who gave his name as Alan and said he was an Iraqi Kurd. The driver was a fruit and vegetable merchant from Bristol who was making a delivery to the restaurant.
He contacted another man who had come with him, who turned out to be from Afghanistan.
The two men were taken to Melksham custody unit and the Immigration Service was alerted. No action is being taken against the driver in respect of the immigrants.
