ALMOST a tenth of all houses in Swindon are occupied by tenants renting from private landlords.
The growth in Swindon's private rented sector has been revealed in a recent council survey.
Coun Andy Albinson (Con, Dorcan), Swindon Council's lead member for housing, said: "By encouraging the private rented sector and raising standards, we can improve the reputation of this tenure.
"This will help property owners and tenants. In a high demand area such as Swindon, increased housing choices will also assist local employers, especially when many jobs are now on a temporary or fixed-term basis."
In 2000 the council launched the Private Sector Accommodation Group to promote the private rental market.
"For the Private Sector Accommodation Group to work well, we need the involvement of local landlords," added Coun Albinson.
"I would urge anyone with an interest in the private rented sector to find out more about the work of this group."
