MANY of your readers may understand Coun Allen's reactions to the behaviour of his colleagues at town council and, if founded, would obviously give concern and offence to many, especially councillors who are able to conduct themselves in a proper manner.

However, during the time since Coun Allen's election he must have learnt a few things about council work, such as the proper way to deal with his concerns, which are now covered by the Code of Conduct of Councillors and guidelines laid down by the National Standards Board of England.

His outbursts and behaviour do nothing to endear councillors to the electorate, quite the reverse.

It is with interest to note that Kennet District Council is to hold training seminars for newer councillors (a bit late after seven months of service) but wouldn't it be a good idea to extend training to all councillors? Quite clearly some of the older councillors seem to be losing the plot as to why they were elected in the first place.

Councillors should never lose sight as to why they have undertaken a difficult, sometimes impossible, role in public service but if they cannot work together and respect each others' views even though they may disagree, they should stand down. Democracy has taken many years to establish, don't let it die now.
