A CAMPING and leisure retailer which has connections with an explorer and a TV adventurer, has opened a new shop in Chippenham.
BCH Camping & Leisure has started trading in New Road, selling a wide range of goods from mosquito spray and nets to walking boots and tents.
Its reputation has attracted the likes of world record-breaking explorer David Hempleman-Adams.
And in September, celebrity survivalist Ray Mears asked staff to test his jungle hammock which is also on sale in the store.
BCH associate director Garth Hussey said: "We are one of the largest outdoor retailers in the south west and for Ray Meers to ask our opinion speaks volumes.
"He took us out on a trip in a forest and showed us how to use the hammock. He called it a day out with Ray and was a really nice guy."
Started in Trowbridge in 1976 by Mr Hussey's father and uncles Bryan and Chris, BCH also has a shop in Bath.
"The shop started because Bryan and Chris wanted to hire a tent to go on holiday but they couldn't find anywhere to get one in Trowbridge so set up their own business," said Mr Hussey.
"Bryan and Chris are planning to take more of a backseat at the end of the year but it will still be very much a family business as my brother and cousins are also involved."
BCH fields inquiries from all over the country and is processing 10,000 mail order forms. Mr Hussey believes the shop workers' love for the outdoor life is the secret behind the success.
The 30-year-old, who goes mountaineering in Scotland and has completed the Three Peaks Challenge, said: "We have a great love for the outdoor life and are interested in giving good advice rather than taking somebody's money and trying to get them out of the door.
"With us you will find everything you need for walking, climbing, mountaineering and world travel.
"We offer a complete and comprehensive selection of the top brands and best outdoor equipment available and pride ourselves on our personal service and advice."
BCH shops can be found in Islington, Trowbridge, New Road in Chippenham and Southgate in Bath.
