A GROUP bidding to preserve Imber's religious sites is increasingly hopeful that St Giles' Church will be saved.

The Friends of Imber Church has seen its membership increase again over Christmas and members believe the next few months will be crucial to their campaign.

The 13th century church is currently leaking water in several places and could face being demolished if funds cannot be found to restore it. It was placed on English Heritage's Buildings at Risk register last summer.

Its fate depends on whether bodies such as the Churches Conserv-ation Trust (CCT) will be able to stump up the cash to stop it decaying.

Despite St Giles' plight Friends chairman John Syme is now quietly confident the church can survive after enlisting the help of MP Andrew Murrison.

Dr Murrison is trying to get fellow MP and CCT chairman Frank Field to view the church before the trust sets its budget for next year.
