A WILTSHIRE policeman is being deployed to war-torn Basra later this month to help train Iraqi officers.
The sergeant, who has not been named for security reasons, will be among 24 officers working alongside the Royal Military Police at the Regional Police Training Academy in Al Basra.
About 460 Iraqi officers will pass through the intensive two-week training programme every month.
Foreign Office minister Baroness Symons said: "Security is an essential part of building a stable and prosperous future for the people of Iraq.
"The capture of Saddam Hussein earlier this month has given the Iraqi people renewed faith that security and reconciliation can be achieved.
"Thanks to the personal contribution of these 23 police officers, I hope to see increasing numbers of Iraqi police officers ready and able to take on the daily business of policing Iraqi streets for themselves."
Plans have been drawn up to train 35,000 new recruits and re-train 450,000 existing officers before the end of the year.
