POLICE hope the thieves who stole a Bible from a car at a Warminster beauty spot on Saturday will see the error of their ways.

The theft at Cley Hill was the latest in a spate of recent incidents which have led officers to step up security at beauty spots in the area. They also are considering putting a hidden camera at the hill's car park.

The Bible and a collection of DVDs worth a total of £108 were stolen from a Renault Laguna between 2.25pm and 3pm.

The car, belonging to a 36-year-old Trowbridge woman, also had a window smashed, causing £100 damage.

Another car was also vandalised in the Cley Hill car park that afternoon, when the driver's window of a Ford Fiesta belonging to a 31-year-old male nurse from Westbury was smashed, causing £50 damage.

Thieves also struck in Longleat's main car park at the weekend, stealing a pensioner's handbag, which had been hidden under a dog blanket on the back seat of her Volkswagen Polo.

The bag, containing a wallet, £30 cash and a Nokia mobile data device, was taken from the 73-year-old Frome woman's car.

Inspector Geoff Miles, of Warminster police, is urging visitors to take greater care of their property.

He said: "You can prevent yourself from being a victim by locking your car and taking valuables with you."
