CONCERNS over speeding motorists have prompted Warminster Town Council to earmark £10,000 for traffic calming measures.
Residents on the west side of the town say the 30mph speed limit along Vicarage Street, West Street and Victoria Road is not properly enforced. In some cases cars have been clocked at more than 60mph and they fear children and parents walking to school are put in danger.
Town councillors have set aside £5,000 from this year's budget for Wiltshire County Council to investigate and implement speed reduction measures along the roads.
Councillors suggested these could include lowering the speed limit to 20mph.
Councillors also pledged £5,000 to improve safety at the Obelisk junction between Vicarage Street, Silver Street and Church Street. Suggestions included putting mirrors on the walls, improved signs and building out the junction to slow traffic.
Members voted to approach highways company Mochel Parkman to survey the junction. They agreed the cash could be rolled over to 2004/05 if the work was not completed by the end of the financial year in April.
