Ridgeway School has been awarded specialist status in science and is launching a competition to celebrate.

Pupils in Years Seven and Eight are being challenged to produce a design for an environmental garden and creative planet centre.

Rebecca Dawson of the Wroughton Science Museum is working with the school, advising pupils on all aspects of gardening and landscape design.

The emphasis will be on conservation, wildlife and sustainability.

The competition will be launched on Friday at the school in Wroughton.

School spokeswoman Liz Laidler said: "Companies and parents who helped us achieve specialist status have been invited to attend the competition launch and will join us for a celebratory lunch.

"They will also be visiting the school's laboratory to see science in action."

In order to achieve specialist status the school had to raise £50,000 and present a complex bid outlining the way in which the additional funds would be spent.

The Government now gives the school an additional £100,000 plus £123 per pupil per year for the next four years.
