WESTLECOT bounced back after their shock Denny Cup exit to start the new year with two vital wins in national competitions.

On Saturday the men's side beat Clarrie Dunbar in their Group J decider in the Famous Grouse Top 10 competition and are now into the play-offs and one step away from a place in the finals at Darlington over the Easter period.

Twenty-four hours later Westlecot's mixed team defeated Perdiswell (Worcester) 89-77 in the zone semi-final of the Egham Trophy, the national mixed inter-club championship.

They now progress to the zone final on Sunday, January 25 against Avon Valley (10am).

In the Top Ten competition Westlecot took the honours on three of the four disciplines against Clarrie Dunbar for a 13 points to two win and leap above the Frome side and win the group.

They now face the Group L runners-up which will be either Banister Park, Worthing or Atherley in the play-offs.

In the Egham Trophy Westlecot took the honours on both away rinks. Mark Dyer's quartet racing away to an 11-shot win although only three shots up at 10 ends.

And Dave Snell's rink won by three shots in a close game.

At Westlecot, Ian Jefferies' rink were always in control by Mel Biggs rink struggled through and lost by 11 shots.

Egham Trophy

Home Rink 1: Jean Bird, Joyce Laming, Hedley Bowen and Ian Jefferies beat M Atkins 25-14 (20 ends only); Rink 2: Wendy Anderson, Barbara Twine, John Thomas and Mel Biggs lost to A Burbridge 12-23.

Away Rink 1: Maureen Rogers, Val Mortimer, Dave Vowles and Dave Snell beat B Whitcombe 23-20; Rink 2: Kevin Embling, Josie Lloyd, Doris Woodley and Mark Dyer won 29-18.
