CREDIT unions in the south west and Hampshire have launched a recruitment drive for volunteers to help in the fight against growing levels of consumer debt.
There are about 50 of the not-for-profit credit unions in the region and they need community-minded people to help with their vital service.
Anne Jennings, of the Co-operative Group, said: "Credit unions simply could not survive without the help of dedicated volunteers.
"Anyone who can assist will not only be able to help others but also learn new skills, build confidence and make new friends.
"Furthermore, for some the experience and skills learnt can help lead to employment and even be the start of a new career."
Ms Jennings added: "In these days of mounting consumer debt, credit unions play a vital role in local communities, offering savings schemes, low cost loans and advice on debt management."
