A DRIVE to cut rubbish generated by Wootton Bassett residents could mean an increase in litter.
That is the fear of town councillor John Allen who thinks a scheme to provide wheelie bins for each household has not been thought through.
Each 180-litre container will hold up to three black bags of rubbish and families that produce any more have to dispose of it themselves.
Coun Allen, (Con) said: "I am wondering what is going to happen to that extra rubbish.
"People are just going to dump it in the nearest lay-by and there will be an increase in fly tipping.
"The problem should be brought to people's attention before rather than after the event."
Lynette Wason, 37, of Orchard House, has two children and her family produces between eight and ten bags of rubbish a week.
She said: "If they are introducing this new scheme we have to live with it."
Residents should receive a bin from February 2 with the first collection on February 16.
Households of five or more can apply for an extra bin for a one-off fee of £24.50 and families on benefits will be charged £12.25. No one else will be able to use a second bin.
District councillor Olivia Thomas (Lib Dem), said: "There is no evidence waste is dumped by people unable to fit it into their bin.
"People dumping rubbish will be prosecuted.
North Wiltshire Council staff will be outside the Town Hall in the High Street on Friday, January 23 and in the Boroughfields Shopping Centre on January 24 to explain the scheme.
Swindon Council has no plans to introduce wheelie bins.
