GANGS of environment workers are out unblocking rivers to avert floods.
With storm warnings common at this time of year it is important rivers run freely.
The Met Office has predicted an unsettled period of weather with rain and wind.
Larger rivers, such as the Thames, near Ashton Keynes and Cricklade can cope with heavy rainfall but smaller brooks need to be checked regularly because they get blocked up more easily.
At the moment in Swindon workers are removing debris from the Cole, the Ray, El-combe Brook, the Rodbourne, Dorcan Brook and Sandford Brook.
The Environment Agency says although the river network is in a good position to cope with rainfall, a heavy rainstorm combined a blocked sluice or grille could see localised flooding.
Flood defence manager Peter Borrows said: "The gangs clearing debris or flood running as it is called carry out an important role to minimise flood risk.
"They are always alert to trouble spots but are extra vigilant given the Met Office warnings."
River blockages can be reported to the agency's hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
