STRIKER Martin Paul may be warmingthe bench while Charlie Griffin and James Constable are banging in the goals but he is not dwelling on an apporach for his services from his former team Bath.

The 29-year-old former Bath City and Newport County star was suspended for the recent home clash for Nuneaton and had to settle for a place in the dugout on his return at former club Newport last week.

His replacement up front was teenager Constable, who scored in both of the last two matches.

Griffin meanwhile has more than staked his claim for one of the forward positions by scoring five goals in his last six appearances.

Paul admits he does not like sitting on the sidelines but says it can only be good for the club if Steve White has different options to play around with.

"Last season myself and Adie Mings were the front pairing for 90 per cent of the games and we finished fourth or fifth in the table," said Paul.

"So for a team to be able to leave out both of last season's successful front pairing only goes to show how strong the squad is now."

Paul is aware Bath have shown an interest in signing him. "It was well documented they made a bid for me when Alan Pridham was in charge but nothing came of it," Paul continued.

"I believe they have made contact with the club since then but as far as I'm aware no firm bid has been discussed. Even if the directors were to accept an offer it doesn't mean I would leave. There might be more money on offer but the club or the dressing room might not be right for me.

"From my point of view there is no point worrying about something that hasn't happened and I am perfectly happy here at Chippenham.

"My aim is to get back in the starting 11 and then get the goals that help us move up into the top 13."

Paul spent the first two months of the season playing through the pain barrier with injuries to both knees.

But now he is feeling fully fit and is looking to wrestle back one of the striking berths.

"My knees are feeling good again especially as the ground is a lot softer now," the forward added. "I picked up a groin injury when Steve first came to the club but that has cleared up now as well.

"At the end of the day Charlie and James are in excellent form at the moment. Charlie is showing the form we all know he is capable of and James has handled the step up to this level very well.

"But we aren't winning league games at the moment and I had a conversation about this with Steve White.

"They are both scoring but not in the same games. The last time we scored more than one goal we won the match at Chelmsford.

"In theory if you are scoring goals you should keep your place but that may not be the case at the moment."

He continued: "At the end of the day we all want to be playing but the competition for places across the whole team can only be good for the club."
