December Supermum Jacquie Wright, of Harnham, with her daughter Kelly. DA4711A MOTHER who gives up all her spare time to look after others and thinks nothing of putting herself last has been crowned the winner of the Southern Electric/Salisbury Journal's December Supermum competition.
Despite holding down two jobs at Salisbury District Hospital, where she typically works from 6am to 7pm, Jacquie Wright still manages to find the time to look after her grandson and an elderly friend - every night.
As soon as Jacquie, who lives in Upper Street, Harnham, walks through her door after a long day at the hospital, she starts caring for four-year-old Wesley so daughter Kelly can go to work.
And when Kelly finishes her evening shift at JJB Sports and returns to her home in Rowbarrow Close, about 9pm, Jacquie heads round to visit her 92-year-old friend, prepare her breakfast and ensure she has everything she needs for the night.
"She's always there for everyone," said Kelly (29), who nominated her mum for the title of December Supermum. "She not only works long hours up at the hospital, but she also looks after my little boy and an elderly friend.
"Nothing is ever too much trouble for my mum. If she can do it she will, even if it means putting herself last all the time."
It seems that Jacquie has never thought twice about putting herself last, despite personal heartache and three serious family illnesses in the last few years.
She has had to cope with losing her father from cancer, nursing husband Pat after he suffered a heart attack and looking after son Dean following a major operation.
"I just feel that it's my responsibility," said Jacquie. "I haven't done anything special or anything different.
"And without my husband I wouldn't be able to do half the things I do - he's an absolute brick to allow me to do all these things for other people, without a single complaint."
Any spare time that Jacquie has is spent cooking, cleaning or gardening.
"Even then she's always growing things for other people," said Kelly. "Last year she grew 5,000 bedding plants for family and friends - all for nothing.
"She really is fantastic, I don't know what I'd do without her. She's my best friend as well as my mum and I can talk to her about anything. If I turn out a fraction like my mum, in any way, I will be very, very chuffed."
