NEW boy Gareth Davies had more of an impact on his first game for Corsham than he bargained for after scoring at both ends in a top of the table clash that left both teams dissatisfied.

Corsham had the lion's share of first half chances but failed to make them count and it was Westbury who had the territorial advantage after the break.

Wayne Wheeler's deflected strike off Davies in the 76th minute looked to be the winner but Davies redeemed himself with an injury time equaliser.

Corsham manager Nobby Bush said: "I thought in the first half we were very careless with our finishing. We've been quite good at that in our last ten games but it wasn't the best of days up front for us.

"Football can be a cruel game sometimes and in the second their shot was going wide until in took a wicked deflection off Gareth.

"You just get a feeling sometimes that it's not going to be your afternoon but to the lads' credit we've got a belief now and we kept plugging away and got our just rewards in the end.

"It would have been a travesty if we had lost it and in the end a draw was the least we deserved.

Westbury were missing several key players including keeper Mark Batters while Corsham were without Dan Beck and Frankie Coleman.

Westbury's returning striker Tony Colbourne had an effort deflected wide early on but after that it was all Corsham.

Steve Roddy had an effort saved by Lewis Porter before Nigel Curtis played Jamie Harrison clean through but he shot wide of the far post.

Alan Griffin teed up Harrison on the edge of the area who fizzed a shot just over. Off target efforts from Roddy and Griffin sandwiched an overhead kick by Colbourne that was blocked.

Corsham went the closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Curtis fed Kilmurray whose curled shot hit the crossbar.

After the restart it was Westbury who looked the livelier with Steve Seals shooting over and Colbourne glancing a header wide.

Craig Chaplin repelled further efforts from Paul Beavers but could do nothing to stop Westbury taking a 76th lead.

Beavers picked out Wheeler who vicious drive was heading wide until it took a deflection off Davies and flew into the far corner.

Corsham stepped things up in search of a late equaliser but despite the efforts of Griffin and Curtis it seemed they would leave Westbury empty handed.

However, in the final minute Geo Sperti whipped a corner into the Westbury goalmouth and Davies rose to head into the bottom corner despite efforts to scramble the ball off the line.

Tom Evans and Nick Beales were both booked for protesting against the goal being allowed and the two sides had to settle for a point apiece.

Corsham entertain Clyst Rovers this Saturday and Bush feels has already achieved his main aim for the season.

"We have made ourselves into a definite force in this league which we haven't been in the last two or three years," the manager added.

"That was the main aim for my first season here and we have now set ourselves up for a good crack at the league next season."

Corsham had five players selected for the Wiltshire county representative side last week. The five chosen were Nigel Curtis, Frankie Coleman, Dan Beck, Alan Griffin and Russell Lodge.
