WROUGHTON Football Club boss Chris Pethick has nicknamed his side 'The Wanderers' because they have yet to play a game at home this season.

The club, who feature in the Wiltshire League Premier Division, have been unable to use their Weir Field ground at all this term after their facilities were demolished before the start of the campaign.

The buildings were deemed unsafe and temporary facilities have failed to materialise.

Wroughton have staved off the threat of having to fold by switching their 18 matches so far to other grounds this season

But the club's frustration is growing, with no solution in sight to their problem.

Club chairman Mel Criddle said: "I understood they were going to put some sort of cabin in place and put it out to tender. However that was a long time ago and it just seems to drag on and on.

"There has been talk of a replacement building but red tape and money seems to have delayed that. It does seem to be taking a long time for temporary changing facilities to be installed.

Criddle added: "Football is a big part in village life it helps the community get together and when the side play at home we quite often get a lot of locals watching the game.

"Wroughton are a senior club in the Wiltshire League and have to stick to the league's criteria for senior grounds.

"I understand there is a meeting of the council coming up shortly and we are all hoping they can come up with a quick solution."

Team boss Pethick admitted: "It's been a bit of a nighmare this season. We lost a few players at the start of the season when the rumour got around that we could well fold, due to our changing facilities.

"However we kept going in the hope that we would be getting some cabins in due course. It's now January and we still seem to be no further forward.

"Swindon Supermarine have helped us out on occasions and several clubs have switched games, we are very grateful to them and the league fixture secretary.

"They say playing at home is worth a goal start, so you could say we are at a disadvantage. The squad have accepted the problems but they can't end soon enough, it's very frustrating.''

But Wroughton's plight looks unlikely to be solved this season.

Parish council chairman Ann Richards said: "We do appreciate the difficulties the club are in and if we could offer a quick solution we would.

"We are dealing with public money and to put a mobile changing facility in place costs a lot of money and you need planning permission.

"We are all really very sorry but we cannot see any easy way out. But we will be trying hard to sort the problem out and hopefully we can get something in place for the start of next season."

Wroughton are face Marlborough Town in a 'home' game this weekend.
