SOUTHAMPTON youngster Michael Green gave a man of the match performance on his home debut for Chippenham and then revealed his ambitions to forge a career in professional football.

The 19-year-old first year professional can play in either defence or midfield and has already featured for Saints reserves.

He signed for the Bluebirds on a month's loan to get first team matches under his belt while the Southampton academy takes a three-week break over Christmas and New Year.

Green came on as a substitute in Chippenham's 3-1 victory at Chelmsford just before Christmas and then failed put a foot wrong in the Boxing Day draw at home to Weston-super-Mare.

He said: "I was well happy obviously to have a good performance on my home debut. I got a bottle of champagne which I'll probably give to my mum for bringing me to the game.

"I think we had a lot more chances than they had. Maybe we should have converted them but it just didn't go our way on the day. I think we were well on top when their player did go off and I think we were just unfortunate not to win the game."

But he conceded that towards the end of the match Weston's ten men could have stolen the three points.

"We were pushing so hard for the win that we were leaving a few gaps at the back and were sometimes we were exposed," Green said.

The teenager said he has had no trouble settling into his spell at Hardenhuish thanks to a familiar face in fellow former Southampton trainee Andy Robertson.

"I used to live in the same lodge as Robbo when he was down there. He's a nice kid and has helped me settle in," Green continued.

"I was keen on getting a few first team games over the Christmas period and Steve White was an ex-coach as Southampton's satellite centre in Bath so it was an easy connection.

"The Dr Martens Premier Division is a very good standard and it's very competitive football. I'm just enjoying my games that I have here."

Green has already featured in a number of reserve matches for Southampton and he hopes his experience gained both at St Mary's and Hardenhuish will benefit his future career.

"It's good at Southampton," he added. "It's all good experience for me. I'm just trying to set myself up for a career in football whether it's at Southampton or another club. I just want to play football.

"I still think Jason Dodd has got a good few years left in him and then there's Chris Baird. That's why I've come here. I want to get first team football to maybe set myself up for a future move."
