SCHOOL children can experience the harsh realities of life in wartime Britain under a new initiative launched on Monday.
Youngsters from across west Wiltshire can learn first-hand from Second World War veterans in a project paid for by the New Opportunities Fund and the Imperial War Museum, London.
Events funded by the cash injection include trips for teachers and pupils to join veterans' events in Normandy, Portsmouth and aboard HMS Belfast in London.
Minister for veterans, Ivor Caplin said: "This project will encourage the development of valuable relationships between schools, museums and veteran groups.
"We aim to show and educate the younger generation on the sacrifices and achievements of earlier generations which I hope will lead to the continuation of large scale commemorative events for many years."
The New Opportunities Fund has announced a £200,000 grant to the Imperial War Museum, which is likely to rise to £5m.
Schools in west Wiltshire can take advantage of the scheme by entering a competition run by the museum. For details teachers and parents can call 0845 0000 121.
