WOOTTON Bassett have been handed an unexpected boost in the Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Vase after second round opponents Sherborne gave them a walkover.

Graham Stickler's men were due to tackle the Dorset-based side in a much-delayed tie at Stoneover Lane tomorrow.

But the Dorset & Wilts One leaders decided to pull out of the competition, leaving the way clear for Bassett to move into the last eight, where they will travel to fellow Southern Counties South side Trowbridge.

Bassett are currently looking for a game, but have selected a squad that includes new prop Dave Howarth, who joined the club two weeks ago and is in line for his first-team debut in the front row.

There is also one change in the back line, ex-Newbury fly-half Pete Thornton taking the place of youngster Duncan Fulling who is unavailable this week.

Meanwhile, Swindon can join their near-neighbours in the quarter-finals of the county competition if they can dispose of Melksham-based Cooper Avon Tyres in their second round clash tomorrow.

Victory will mean a home tie against Calne in the last eight.

Three changes have been made to the side from last week.

Prop Steve Davis moves up from the bench and Scott Chapman shifts from prop to his preferred position of hooker.

Robin Haxton returns to full-back to replace Nathan Waite.

Corsham or Blandford will complete the quarter-final picture, the winner of their tie going through to face Bradford on Avon.

IT'S England versus Wales at Greenbridge Road tomorrow as Swindon's second and third strings host touring line-ups from across the Severn Bridge.

The Stormers and Nomads face a challenge from Clwb Rygbi Cymru Caerdydd, who are visiting Greenbridge Road on a short tour.

Spectators are more than welcome.
