Ref. 28600-10IF you aim to get fit in 2004, Swindon Striders has the answer.

The running club is launching a special group for beginners.

Club chairman Andy Smith, 49, from West Swindon, said: "I have been flooded with calls from people wanting to come running, but not having much experience. So I decided to start a group that will ease them in gently."

The first weekly run for beginners takes place on Tuesday, January 27, at 7.30pm and departs from the Oasis Leisure Centre in North Star Avenue.

Mr Smith said: "Anyone is welcome to give it a try. We will start off with a slow run or fast walk of three to four miles then increase the speed and distance in future weeks."

Swindon Striders has been going for 10 years and has 50 members.

The group meets on Monday and Friday nights to run between six and eight miles around the town.

Mr Smith started running seven years ago after his father, Gordon, died of leukaemia, aged 65.

He said: "I did the Great North Run to raise money for cancer sufferers and haven't stopped running since. I go four or five times a week and really enjoy it. Besides keeping fit, it is also very social."
