Student nurse Ruth Yates will have a long time to wait before she faces another bad hair day.

The mother-of-five, of Parkstone Walk, Park South, is preparing to lose her locks in a sponsored head shave to raise money for the Swindon Cancer Appeal, in aid of Macmillan nurses, and Prospect Hospice, in Wroughton.

Ruth, 40, said: "I used to love biology at school and have always wanted to do nursing.

"When I started learning about cancer I decided to raise money for Macmillan nurses."

The head shave will take place at New College at 11am on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Swindonians are preparing to get into gear for the annual Castle Mountain Bike Ride, in aid of the Swindon Cancer Appeal.

Last year hundreds of people from across Swindon raised more than £7,700 for the appeal.

This year's bike ride will take place on Sunday, June 6.

Riders can choose a route of 10, 15 or 25 miles along part of the Ridgeway.

For more information call ride organiser Jill Greenaway on 01793 521630. If you want to sponsor Ruth call her on 01793 320166.
