A 13-year-old Bradon Forest School pupil has died after inhaling an aerosol spray.
Gary Perring, who was in Year Eight, died at the Great Western Hospital on Sunday.
Gary moved in with his grandparents at Washpool, near West Swindon, last September and transferred to the Purton school from Greendown Community School in West Swindon.
Bradon Forest headteacher Len Spiers has written to parents and counselling has been made available for pupils and staff.
Mr Spiers said: "Staff and students were shocked and saddened at the news of the death of Gary Perring.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad and difficult time."
The cause of death is still being investigated but pupils have been told it was an accident which occurred at Gary's home.
Police said the incident was reported at 8pm on Sunday.
It is the second tragedy to strike the school in less than six months.
In September, pupil Joanna Hewson, 13, was found hanged in her bedroom on the first day of term after the summer break.
