SO not surprisingly West Wiltshire Primary Care Trust has recommended that Trowbridge Maternity Unit should be the one that stays open while Devizes and Malmesbury close.
Consultation on the closures is about to start but the West Wiltshire Trust, which confusingly runs the maternity services in Kennet and North Wiltshire, it seems has already made up its mind.
Campaigners in Devizes and Malmesbury are determined the consultation should not be a foregone conclusion and wants people to keep up the pressure.
Why should it be that just because Trowbridge is saved that it goes without saying that the other small units should close?
All the arguments for Trowbridge to remain can also be put for the other towns. People living in Devizes and the villages around the town will face long and difficult journeys if the unit closes.
In the past year since the threat of closure has become more and more real many people have forward with their stories of how they believe their babys' lives have been saved by having a unit open 24 hours a day close at hand.
It is important now more than ever that people stand up and be counted. The trust must be told in no uncertain terms that the units are vitally important to the communities they serve.
Make a note in your diary of the consultation dates and go along and let your view be known.
