SOUTHAMPTON Football Club honours its former president Ted Bates, who passed away in November, with a special friendly against German champions Bayern Munich on Monday evening for the Ted Bates Trophy.
Saints were looking for high-profile opposition for the inaugural fixture and they don't come much bigger than the four-times European champions who take on Real Madrid next month in the first knockout stage of this season's Champions League.
Saints chairman Rupert Lowe, said the whole club was looking forward to playing such a massive name in European football and said he was delighted that expanding Southampton firm Orchard Homes is to sponsor such a prestigious match.
"Orchard Homes has been a great supporter of the club over the last three years and we are delighted that the company is to be our main sponsor for this friendly encounter where fans will enjoy some top class action on the pitch and remember the great contribution Ted Bates gave to Southampton FC,'' said Mr Lowe.
Bates spent more than 60 years with the club, as a player, coach, manager, chairman and president and his honours include an MBE and the freedom of the city.
Ken Lake of Orchard Homes said: "We are really looking forward to the match and hope a good crowd come to watch what promises to be a great game.''
