SCREWFIX FIRST DIVISION: CALNE'S inconsistent season continued as they went down at home to an experienced Street team who defended in numbers and broke swiftly.
The visitors took an early lead and then responded to a spell on Calne pressure early in the second half by notching another goal.
Calne boss Kelvin Highmore threw extra bodies forward late on but it was to no avail. The manager said: "We were poor all round and I can't make any excuses for it. I can't fault the lads' effort and commitment but the quality just wasn't there. We didn't string two passes together.
"We had a ten day rest and it was like we were starting all over again. In the second half we responded and it was not down to a lack of trying. We had a good spell but their second goal took the stuffing out of us.
"You have to hold your hands up and admit we were second best on the day. Their midfield was better and Darren Palfrey didn't waste a ball for them."
Street started well and took the game to Calne snatching the lead in the 12th minute.
Damon Palfrey sent in a deep free-kick from the right and Matt Francis stole in at the far post to head home.
Calne's struggled to get in an effort for 20 minutes until a corner was cleared as far as Ryan Pratley who hit a shot back in from the edge of the area that goalkeeper Kevin Hurd easily get.
Calne started the second half vigourously and on 50 minutes Matt Pratley flicked the ball on for James Lye to turn and shoot wide.
But Street ended Calne's best spell by extending their lead soon after.
Palfrey's long-range effort hit the crossbar and fell kindly for Richard Smith to shoot home from eight yards out. Calne instantly threw caution to the wind and pushed the excellent Darren Smart further forward to leave three at the back.
The move almost paid off as Smart sprinted from deep in his own half to the edge of the Street penalty area and sent a rasping low drive just wide of the post with the goalkeeper well beaten.
The attacks continued and on 76 minutes Lye won a free-kick on the left and from his precise delivery Danny Jones headed just over the bar.
On Saturday Calne travel to Willand with some question marks over one or two players.
Ben Highmore missed Monday's trip to Melksham with a muscle strain while a promotion at work means Martyn Wheeler may not be available.
