A SCHOOL had to be evacuated yesterday after a fire was discovered in toilets
It is believed that the blaze was started by a pupil in one of the girls' cubicles at Churchfields School.
Headteacher Steve Flavin paid tribute to the way youngsters at the school reacted to the situation. He said: "It was towards the end of the day, but I'm very pleased with the behaviour of the students. Everyone followed our fire procedures very well.
"It wasn't a large fire, but there was a lot of smoke,"
Mr Flavin praised the common sense of another pupil who set off the fire alarm.
The 1,100-pupil school, in Salcombe Drive, Walcot, was evacuated immediately and the fire service arrived within minutes, he said.
A brigade spokesman said the call was received at 2.48pm and appliances from Stratton St Margaret and Swindon central were sent out. It took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control and the building was smoke-logged.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated but the school will be open as usual today.
