DEVIZES Light Operatic Society may never again be able to stage productions of its staple fare Gilbert and Sullivan and Viennese operettas.
Figures released by society chairman, Leslie Lawrence, show that, while West End and Broadway musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma and South Pacific turned in handsome profits, other shows have not done well.
In 1997, the society's production of The Gypsy Princess made a loss of £922, and The Merry Widow a £1,139 loss. Pirates of Penzance made a huge loss of £1,754 in 2002.
By contrast, last year's South Pacific, made a profit of £953, and all four nights sold out.
Mr Lawrence urged his committee to stick to reliable box office bankers not operettas.
Annie Get Your Gun will be performed during the Easter break at Dauntsey's School.
Anyone who can help with publicity for the show is asked to contact John Craig on (01380) 726343 or email him on craig@johnm80.fsnet.co.uk
