A FIERY encounter at Chippenham saw the long unbeaten run of the combined team come to an end following a closely fought encounter.
With two key players on the pitch carrying niggling injuries the pressure was always likely to be upon the visitors but it was particularly unfortunate that Chippenham secured an early score from a forward drive that followed a crooked throw in that went unpenalised by the referee.
Following this early set-back the visitors then set about their hosts with considerable vigour and exchanges during the rest of the first half were even although livewire winger Raf Whitcher was unlucky not to break through following a poor clearance kick out of defence by Chippenham.
But at half-time the visitors were forced to change their two injured players and so Prop, Ewan Lacey and Full Back Scott Simmons left the field causing a significant positional shake-up.
Worse was to follow when Chippenham were awarded a second try that had everyone bar the referee knew had not been grounded. A Chippenham forward was then sinbinned for stamping and influential Fly Half David Finlay departed for hospital with a neck injury.
Now down to 14 men, having run out of replacements. the combined team could easily have buckled after Chippenham secured a third try following a penalty but the resolve of the visitors was tremendous and they rounded off the game by scoring a well-worked try from number eight Matt Sollars after a five metre scrum.
