I FELT I had to write to let people know of events that happened prior to the wall of Rosemount, Stradbrook, Bratton, collapsing (Wiltshire Times, January 16).

On August 18 2003 I had a note delivered to Cllr Gladys Drewett to raise my concern over the wall becoming increasingly misshapen and a crack that seemed to be expanding. I felt the wall was a danger.

In a telephone conversation with Gladys later she assured me the wall had been inspected by a council engineer some time previously who claimed there was no problem with it

but would ask him/her to look again.

Also, the owner, when approached, saw no reason to have anything done.

Three weeks later I observed a new half-inch crack one foot above the existing crack.

If the council engineer did look at the wall and declared it safe should it not be appropriate for that person to resign on the grounds of negligence?

On January 11 the wall fell down. It was very fortunate no one was injured or killed. It took two days before anything was moved or a footpath cleared and it was late on January 15 before the road was opened.

Residents living on the Imber side of the collapsed wall feared what would happen if emergency vehicles were needed. It is three miles up round the White Horse. It is our way out of the village.

My thoughts now are can I bill the council for extra fuel and cleaning my car where I have had to travel over the White Horse way?

With this said I think someone has some explaining to do. I was only trying to save people a lot of time, trouble and money.

J STOKES,

Bratton.
