FAIRFORD manager Mark Webb is preparing to fend off the vultures that are set to swoop for star striker Phil Corcoran.

The forward has been in sensational form since rejoining the club from Wilts League Stratton a month ago, helping the Cinder Lane side to surge from the bottom half of the Premier Division into the top eight.

Two superb goals in the 5-2 win over Shortwood last Saturday only added to his reputation and alerted the attention of rival clubs.

Premier Division champions North Leigh have since made a move, submitting seven days notice of approach for the forward.

Other offers could follow, but Webb is hoping to hang on to one of his main assets.

He said: "I've spoken to Corky and he's enjoying his football here.

"He will talk to them, but he doesn't seem to be interested in moving to North Leigh."

Any transfer would prove a major blow, having already lost two prolific marksman in Lee Stoddart through work commitments and Glenn Armstrong who signed for Supermarine this week.

Midfielder Lee Clark is also staying put for the time being.

The club captain has returned from a trip to Australia and has decided to stay at Cinder Lane despite interest from Highworth.

Clark will play when Fairford entertain Southall tomorrow.

Webb is hoping to avenge a 5-2 defeat in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season.

"We owe them one after the first game of the season and we are looking forward to it," he said.

Highworth play host to struggling Pewsey Vale, and boss John Fisher is expecting his troops recapture the form that saw them thrash Henley 6-1 on Tuesday evening.

"That's as well as we've played in the first half on Tuesday. I was a happy manager," said Fisher.

"If we play like that against Pewsey we should get a result."

Sean Terry impressed in midfield following a switch from Supermarine and is expected to retain his place in the centre alongside former Hunts Copse teammate Richard Knox.

The midweek win moved Highworth up to seventh, nine points behind leaders Didcot with two games in hand.

The next month sees Fisher's men face mediocre opponents such as Carterton, Chipping Norton, Bicester and Henley again.

A good run of victories should put the Swindon side in a prime position.

Wootton Bassett travel to Henley hoping that neighbours Highworth have softened them up following that 6-1 drubbing.

Bassett are at full strength, giving manager Pete Yeardley a rare dilemma.

"It is probably the first time this season that we've had everyone available," he said, "and it gives me a selection headache."

The Bassett boss is unlikely to make sweeping changes after his side were cruelly denied a point by a late Southall goal last weekend.

In Division One West, leaders Purton bid to extend their six-point lead at Clanfield.

Jim Queenen has returned from holiday to ensure fourth-placed Shrivenham are at full strength for their trip to Middle Barton.

Elsewhere, Malmesbury Vics need maximum points at Kidlington to pull themselves out of the bottom three.

Fellow strugglers Cirencester United are away to Harrow Hill.
