IN days gone by, every Swindon neighbourhood could boast its own Co-op shop. And now a former Co-op employee has set up a group to celebrate the organisation's history in the area.

David Macey who worked for the Co-op for 30 years, has set up the Co-op History Group, which has been awarded £500 from Oxford, Swindon and Gloucester Co-op to pay for photographic equipment, photocopying and laminating to stage an

exhibition.

The first Co-op store appeared in Swindon in 1837 and, until the 1960s, here was even a mobile Co-op to serve smaller areas.

There is still a presence in Swindon with the large store in Old Town as well as smaller shops around the town. Mr Macey would like anyone with a connection to the Co-op to get in touch. He's particularly keen on photographs or other interesting items from the past.
