Ref. 28733-62A TASTE of the Far East came to Swindon when people toasted the Chinese New Year.

Around 150 diners gathered at the Parasol restaurant in Commercial Road on Wednesday night to celebrate this major event in the Chinese calendar.

And they enjoyed a feast of traditional Chinese food, along with a carnival atmosphere.

Besides sampling specialities like beef choi sum and sha cha chicken, guests were also treated to a colourful lion dance.

Parasol chef Tony Chan led the dance, dressed as the traditional "fat boy", as a lion mask was paraded around the restaurant.

Parasol owner Sam Mak, 42, said: "It was a fabulous night and a wonderful way to show people here how we celebrate the New Year at home."

After a champagne reception, wine was served throughout the evening.

To the sound of firecrackers and drums, diners were served six different starters and a host of main courses, including the ever-popular sweet and sour pork.

The Year of the Monkey, officially started on Thursday, a new moon day.

Mr Mak said: "The dance was spectacular and there were absolutely no leftovers. It was great to see so many people enjoying authentic Chinese food."
