A LEADING fire specialist has called for greater clarity on new legislation banning the use of halon gases in fire fighting systems.
Chubb Fire say that thousands of businesses have been left bewildered following the publication of confusing press reports and apparently contradictory advice from a number of organisations attempting to resolve the issues surrounding the ban.
They want to see more collaboration between the insurance companies, product manufacturers, the government and the press to prevent "a difficult situation from descending into chaos".
John Spencer, managing director, said: "Now is the time for a cool head and a cool discussion to ensure UK businesses and relevant authorities receive appropriate advice and support to overcome this halon hurdle."
The main problems relate to the timetable for the phasing out of halon systems, banned on December 31, and the subsequent collection and destruction of fixed fire suppression systems and portable extinguishers.
Mr Spencer said: "Many companies have adopted the responsible approach and replaced their technology with a more environmentally-friendly alternative, others haven't.
"It seems wrong that those who have had to make the necessary investments should now be in any way penalised or disadvantaged for doing so, or made to feel that their actions were not actually required."
