MALMESBURY market could be resurrected once a month on a Saturday.

The Chamber of Commerce are going to meet regularly with the town council to bring a market back to the town after the previous Sunday market was shut down because of objections from local businesses.

Chamber member Ian Pollard said at the chamber's AGM on Monday that holding a market once a month seemed to be the most successful model.

He said: "The best day would seem to be Saturday when people come into Malmesbury. We are also looking at the possibility of closing the High Street."

Chairman of the chamber Alan Woodward said nothing was set in stone but a shortlist of eight market operators had been selected that would be suitable to run it.

Landmark Markets, the operators of the previous market were not on the list, he said.

Mr Pollard said: "I think our problem last time around was we had no experience. Let's ask each of the operators to put their best foot forward to see the ideas they come up with."
