SCREWFIX FIRST DIVISION: CORSHAM'S recent good form was brought to a halt when they suffered a shock defeat at basement side Shepton Mallett.

Colin Bush's team had numerous chances to take the lead but they were undone by an injury time penalty which handed the home team the points.

The Corsham manager was disappointed with the result but hopes it will prove to be a wake-up call for his players. "We've done really well over last three or four weeks to be fair but this was just a performance that really didn't have any cohesion," he said.

"It was so disappointing after the final whistle but on reflection it was just a bad day at the office. It was nothing to do with Shepton Mallett why we lost.

"As our bad luck continued they grew in confidence. But even if we had got a draw I would have been just as disappointed."

Corsham had the better of the first half and should have gone in front on the stroke of half-time when Dave Kilmurray put Alan Griffin through but he lobbed wide.

After the break Griffin helped the ball on to give Kilmurray a clear sight of goal but the striker struck a post.

Frankie Coleman went on a good run but blazed the ball over from the penalty spot and the Shepton goalkeeper did superbly to deny Griffin as he was about to pull the trigger.

The decisive goal came deep into injury time when Matt Hobbs was adjudged to have fouled his man in the area and Nathan Baird struck home from the penalty spot. Even then Corsham had a chance to level when Griffin went close with a header.

On Saturday Corsham travel to Weston St Johns, who put four past Hallen last weekend. Bush said: "The Hallen manager told me Weston have completely turned it round and are 12 unbeaten.

"But we will go there knowing that we can get among teams. The boys have been performing very well but hopefully that defeat will just wake us up again."

Bush hopes to have Gareth Davies back in the side after he missed the Shepton game because of family commitments. The Corsham boss has moved to bolster his squad by making a seven-day approach for Melksham forward Gary Banks.
