FORMER Spitalcroft allotment holders next week go into battle against developers who want to create allotments off Windsor Drive, Devizes.
A public inquiry is being held on Tuesday in Devizes to decide whether the Windsor Drive site is suitable for allotments.
The inquiry is in the Wessex Room at the Corn Exchange, Devizes, at 10am.
Developers Robert Hitchins wanted to build on the Spitalcroft site and give the former allotment holders space at Windsor Drive instead.
But Kennet District Council said that the Windsor Drive site was not good enough for the gardeners.
The inquiry is the latest in a saga dating back to 1999 when allotment holders at Spitalcroft, just off London Road, were evicted.
Since then allotment holders have had to wait for plots at Quakers Walk.
At a public inquiry in 2000, Pippin Homes was refused an application to build on Spitalcroft and provide allotments at Windsor Drive.
The inspector said that the Windsor Drive site was not a good enough alternative to Spitalcroft for allotments.
