TOWN councillors are maintaining their objection to the siting of a new cricket pavilion for Marlborough College even though Kennet District Council has passed one set of plans.

The public school's proposal to build the pavilion in a central location on its sports fields has upset members of the town council and some residents, including the families of some college staff.

Opponents say the proposed location would mar part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Despite this objection Kennet District Council approved plans last year.

Now the school has come back with revised plans omitting columns at the front of the building, a reduction in the number of windows and no vehicular access as originally proposed.

Proposals showing retaining walls have also been dropped in favour of natural earth banks.

Coun Bryan Castle reminded the town council's planning committee that they voted 11-0 with one abstention to object to the original plans. He said the location had not changed.

Coun Hilary Cripps said: "They are only proposing some small changes in the design and it will still be a blot on the landscape."

The committee agreed to repeat its original objection to the pavilion.
