THOSE who have chosen recently to point out the apparent powerlessness of Marlborough Town Council might care to note your recent report on a Kennet District Council planning meeting.

A significant development in a modern style in the conservation area was being considered.

A district councillor referred to the approval of the planning application by Marlborough Town Council. This was taken as giving direction to the planning committee in making its decision.

That the Civic Society objected because the plan contravened Kennet District Council's own recommendations for appropriate materials and styles in Marlborough conservation area, and two of Marlborough's district councillors, Coun Skittrall and Coun Cavill, objected to the plan, carried no weight at all. The approval by the town council did.
