A VILLAGE social club is warning other west Wiltshire groups to watch out after receiving a bogus letter asking it to shell out £135 to avoid breaking the law.

The scam letter, which has already been sent to businesses in the area, falsely claims that the addressee must register under the Data Protection Act.

But unless a group holds data about people on a computer it does not need the service, and even then it costs £35 not £135.

Committee member John Drinkwater, of Dilton Social Club, Dilton Marsh, said: "This is a whole new group of people they are targeting. These sort of people are not going to be as savvy about the law as businesses and could be taken in.

"I think we would have fallen for it if one of the girls had not spotted a second class stamp on what was supposed to be an official letter."
