SICK Belarusian schoolgirl Katya Shashkova is to spend a life-extending holiday in Westbury after Wiltshire Times readers responded to an appeal for help.

Charity Chernobyl Children In Need is to bring 11-year-old Katya, who is battling leukaemia, to west Wiltshire in February in a bid to boost her immune system before she undergoes treatment in Belarus later this year.

The charity appealed earlier this month for funds to enable the trip to go ahead.

Adrian Walker, of Chernobyl Children in Need, said: "It now looks as though the trip can go ahead at the end of February. There has been a great response by the public after we appealed for help and their money has started to come in. We would like to say a big thank you to the public who have helped."

Chernobyl Children In Need, which directs its efforts to providing aid to poverty stricken villages in Belarus still suffering from the effects of the nuclear disaster, has joined with fellow Westbury charity Chernobyl Children Lifeline to bring Katya to the town.

Anyone who would like to donate money towards Katya's trip is asked to contact Mr Walker on (01373) 858584.
