THE Year of the Monkey began in style for youngsters in Westbury as the town library turned Chinese for the afternoon.
This was the second year the library has celebrated Chinese New Year and the event on Thursday saw 18 four- to 11-year-olds and six adults join in the fun.
The children spent an hour taking part in traditional Chinese craft activities such as making lanterns, fans and lucky gift purses. As an added bonus they went away with their purses full of fortune cookies donated by the Champion Chinese takeaway in Warminster Road.
This year's event was further boosted by the arrival of some authentic dcor from the Orient.
Librarian Sabina Edwards said: "One of our members of staff has a son in Hong Kong so we got some decorations sent out from there."
Celebrating the Year of the Monkey proved a hit with the children and is just one of many regular events library staff organise to promote reading among children.
Mrs Edwards said: "It just adds interest for the children and helps them associate the library with fun.
