A SURVEY of more than 2,600 young people in Wiltshire has shown the county's youth development service is on course to reach a Government target to ensure it works with enough young people.

The survey of 13 to 16- year-olds showed that 25 per cent of young people have had contact with Wiltshire County Council's youth service through one of its 20 youth development centres, supported youth clubs or the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards scheme.

The service is on target to reach the Department of Education goal that says councils should be working with 25 per cent of 13 to 19-year-olds.

Results from the questionnaires also showed the youth service had a positive impact on those young people who had contact with them.

Those who sought advice from the youth service were four times more likely to know they could organise their own projects and activities and have a say about what happens in their area than those who do not.

Head of youth development David Whewell said: "This survey is about listening and responding. The views of young people are vital in shaping the county council's youth development service and understanding how, why and where the service is being used."
