KEVIN Banks signed for Calne Town from Melksham Town last night and the midfielder is hoping to push his new club towards a top six finish.

The 20-year-old will go straight into the squad for Calne's Screwfix Division One match at home to Shrewton tomorrow.

He joined Melksham in 2001 from Cirencester academy but has found himself out of favour in recent weeks and admits he is looking forward to a fresh challenge.

He said: "I left Melksham for a variety of reasons. I have not been in the team that much lately which is very disappointing.

"Also last week the manager Nigel Tripp publicly criticised me and while I understand he is trying to gee me up, I feel he went a bit to far.

"I am looking forward to playing for Calne. They are a good set of lads and have some some very good players. Hopefully I can help them pick up a few points and get into a top six position."

He continued: "I would like to thank Nigel Tripp and his assistant Pete Tripp for everything they have done for me.

"I also appreciate the efforts of chairman Mick Perrin and secretary Dave Phillips.

"I have really enjoyed my time at Melksham but it is now time to move on."

Calne Town manager, Kelvin Highmore, believes the signing of Banks could be the finishing touch to his midfield.

He said: "On his day Kevin is a very good player. He has got a great work rate and a few tricks up his bonnet if he needs them.

"We have been lacking a player like him since Ben Moore has been out through injury.

"His work rate will combine with James Lye's flair, Robbie Lardner's experience and Danny Jones, who has been excellent, to give us a great balance in midfield."

Calne go into tomorrow's match with a number of selection problems.

Striker Glenn Armstrong travelled with Supermarine to Shepshed on Tuesday night but did not get in on the 1-0 defeat and Highmore is not sure who Armstrong will be playing for tomorrow.

Striker Ben Highmore is still struggling with his groin injury while goalkeeper Dave Hunt is suffering with a bruised rib Darryl Simms is on standby if Hunt does not make it.

Highmore is also hoping to secure the signing of Bath City youth striker Craig Lewis in the next few days.
