VILLAGERS have reacted with dismay over plans to demolish a block of garages in Codford accusing housing bosses of acting like developers.

Over 40 residents have lodged a petition against plans by the West Wilts Housing Society to build three houses, replacing garages, at Cherry Orchard in Codford.

Now the parish council has given the campaigners their full backing claiming the garages are only empty because of rising rents.

Romy Wyeth, chairman of Codford parish council said: "The housing society is acting more like a developer than social landlords.

"We believe the garages are an important local amenity that should be repaired and made available at a reasonable rent."

Rent for the garages is currently £7 a week and some campaigners fear the cost is an attempt to drive them out to give the go-ahead for development.

But West Wiltshire Housing Society claims it is seeking planning permission because only four of the 12 garages are used.

Paul Moore, property development manager, said: "A survey revealed the concrete garages need to be demolished and because they are not being used it is logical to build housing with parking facilities."
