UNTIL FEBRUARY 7, BATH: Dr Who favourite Colin Baker appears in the Carl Rosa Company's new production of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic HMS Pinafore at the Theatre Royal Bath next week.
This brand new production of Gilbert and Sullivan's much-loved comic opera, HMS Pinafore is directed by one of this country's most highly-acclaimed actors, Timothy West, with Colin Baker (best known for his TV role as Dr Who) starring as Sir Joseph Porter.
All aboard the HMS Pinafore, where an hilarious tale of love, hypocrisy and mistaken identity unravels when the Captain's daughter falls secretly in love with a common sailor. Pledged by her father to marry the mighty Sir Joseph Porter, the 'ruler of the Queen's Navy', Josephine finds herself torn between love and duty. But a remarkable twist of fate changes all when a long-kept secret is let slip, somersaulting our heroes towards a heady climax of fun, frivolity and fortune.
This sea-faring smash hit show, performed by Carl Rosa's superb cast and orchestra, is bursting with Gilbert's brilliant satiric wit and packed with some of Sullivan's most popular songs. Beautifully and imaginatively staged with exquisite period costumes, Carl Rosa continues to present Gilbert and Sullivan with authentic style and dazzling humour.
HMS Pinafore premiered in 1878 at the Opera Comique in London, and became Gilbert and Sullivan's first smash hit, enjoying a successful run of 571 performances.
Colin Baker is principally known for very contrasting roles in two of the BBC's most popular and successful television programmes.
In the popular drama The Brothers, Colin was universally loathed as Paul Merroney, the prototype yuppie; and in Dr Who, he was universally loved as the flamboyant sixth incarnation of the Doctor, a role he successfully reprised in the stage version Dr Who The Ultimate Adventure.
On stage in London, Colin has appeared in Run For Your Wife at the Criterion Theatre, The Price of Justice at the Mermaid Theatre, Traitors at the Hampstead Theatre Club, and in 1987 he played the role of the twins in Corpse! at The Strand Theatre and the Theatre Royal Bath.
Colin's many television credits also include War and Peace, Jonathan Creek, Swallows And Amazons Forever, The Waiting Game with John Thaw, Sunburn and Doctors.
