A TROWBRIDGE woman has been fined £500 after admitting she fraudulently claimed benefits.
Christine Lancey Jones, 59, of Gloucester Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of giving false information in order to receive benefits at Chippenham Magistrates' Court on January 20.
She will have to repay £3,518.50 in benefits, was fined £500 by the court and ordered to pay £75 in costs.
Councillor Roy While, the district council's corporate portfolio holder, said: "This was a very successful example of the Department for Work and Pensions' counter-fraud investigation service and the council working together to stamp out fraud.
"People who are genuinely in need should always contact us to see what benefits they are entitled to. It is a very tiny minority that abuse the system."
To report a suspected fraud, call either the National Fraud Hotline on 0800 854440 or the council's fraud section on (01225) 770301 (both 24-hours).
All calls are treated in confidence, and you do not have to give your name.
