We heard this week how 83-year-old Bette Anderson was not fooled when fraudsters tried to get her to hand over £1,000 in a telephone scam.
She showed great initiative and managed to get the conmen on the phone to give her their details which she passed on to the fraud squad.
It goes to prove that it's not just on the streets that we need to keep our wits about us.
Bette's story shows that as the great era of 'communication' marches on it sadly gives conmen more varied opportunities to cash in on vulnerable members of society.
There are also many youngsters who could learn a thing or two from Bette about being street-wise and looking out for themselves.
