WESTLECOT women maintained their winning streak on the Lodden Vale green at Basingstoke with another success.

They stayed on course to retain their National Women's Over 60s Double Rinks crown with a comprehensive 20-shot win over King George Field (Chessington) in the last 16 .

Last March at Basingstoke they won the national competition a first for either the Westlecot men's or women's sections in their 20-year history.

In the final they easily overcame the challenge of Cheshunt with a 48-29 victory.

On Monday they re-visited the Loddon Vale Club for the first time since their win in the final.

And once again, like last year in the last 16 at Basingstoke, Westlecot were too strong for the Surrey side.

On that occasion Westlecot were 40-36 winners but this time around they ran-out 51-31 victors.

The match was close overall at 10 ends with Josie Lloyd's rink 11-7 up while Doris Woodley's quartet only led 9-8, but then matters changed.

Two fours and a two put Lloyd 21-10 ahead at 15 and they powered on to a 28-14 success.

Woodley was 15-14 down at 15 ends but then won four of the next five, picking up nine shots to win by seven.

Team boss Sue Baker said: "Two significant ends in the match were the ninth and 14th.

"Doris dropped a three and Josie a four on the ninth but both won on the 14th. Josie collected a four and Doris a five.

"I certainly did not expect us to win by such a margin as last year's game was close throughout.

"This time it was tight in the early stages, but in the latter stages we pulled well clear.

"It was a good team performance and hopefully we can maintain that kind of form."

In the quarter-finals Westlecot have been drawn against Kent side Angel (Tonbridge). The game must be played by February 10, and a neutral venue has to be arranged.

WESTLECOT will have two representatives at Northampton in national finals next month.

David Vowles and Howard Pryse have qualified in the Over 60s Pairs, while the quartet of Jean Bird, Joyce Laming, Kevin Embling and Dave Snell are through in the Mixed Fours.

To reach the Northampton final stages Vowles and Pryse beat Nailsea's A Grey and R Becker 20-10 in the area final.

And Snell's rink had an even bigger win in the area final, defeating a North Wilts quartet skipped by Nick Grenfell 25-10.

In the national competitions that lead to Melton Mowbray, the singles, pairs, triple and fours have reached the area semi-finals stage, and Westlecot still have representatives in all four men's events.
