A BID for a new Swindon and Wiltshire record office has failed to win money from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Tough competition meant that eight out of the 10 projects under consideration nationally did not receive awards.
Officers from Wiltshire County Council and Swindon Council have already started looking at alternative sources of funding and alternative ways of providing a modern home for Wiltshire and Swindon's records planned for Chippenham.
The councils had bid for £5.26 million, and were going to fund the rest of the £12.4 million project between them.
